What’s your favourite Whalemeat recipe? It’s an important question – or at least it would be if you were still on rations in the 1940s. Here’s Patsy from my 1940s Learn to Cook in Pictures cookbook discussing the finer points of Whale cuisine with her dad:
There are plenty of reasons why we shouldn’t eat Whales: They’re wild, not domesticated; They’re awe-inspiring mysterious creatures; We don’t need to eat them; We could just enjoy them; They’re no use roasted, but only good for boiling or frying. Seriously, I’m delighted that we’ve changed our eating habits in the UK. What a shame many other areas of the world haven’t.
Don’t try this one at home.
